The antenatal clinic
We have a full antenatal and postnatal service provided by our midwives. Your care will be shared between the midwives, the doctors and the hospital. The antenatal clinics are held every Tuesday in Gowerton and Penybryn and each Wednesdays at Penclawdd.
As soon as you know you are pregnant, you should avoid smoking and alcohol and take folic acid which you can get from the chemist.
Contraception services
The doctors and nurses provide advice on all types of family planning. Dr. Thornley, Dr Edwards, Dr Grey and Dr Bizby specialise in hormone implants (nexplanon/implanon) and IUCD (coils).
For emergency contraception advice, you need to see any of the female doctors as soon as possible, and not more than 72 hours after having unprotected sex.
Cervical Smears
All women between 25 and 65 should have a cervical smear test every five years (unless you’ve had an abnormal smear). You will get a letter reminding you when your smear test is due. You should make your appointment to see the practice nurse about halfway between periods.
